Choosing a tent for the Pacific Crest Trail essentially meant buying a house for the next five months. It was not a decision to be taken lightly. When you’re walking 2650 miles, bringing the wrong equipment is a great way to ensure failure. Yet while you don’t want to be unprepared, it’s always a good idea to reduce your pack weight where possible. This doesn’t mean that you should throw away your first aid kit, second water bottle and toilet paper for the sake of an easier hike, but it’s definitely worth looking at your gear before you set out and deciding whether it’s all really necessary. My Pacific Crest Trail Gear List

Below is a list of all the gear I will be taking with me on the Pacific Crest Trail.

I won’t be carrying all of it at the same time, as the snow equipment will be of no use to me in the desert and the California maps and extra water bottles will just be unnecessary weight once I get to Oregon and Washington.

I already own a vast majority of the gear listed but some of it I still need to obtain. I will also probably end up getting rid of or exchanging some of these items when I’m on the trail and adding extra things. There are still 3 months to go before I set off, so the list will almost certainly change. But in the meantime this is my best estimate of what I will need to take with me! Read more
